Did you know…
- In New Zealand, 1 in 3 women who have had a baby leak
- Recommended guidelines are for women to undergo a minimum of 3-4 months supervised pelvic floor muscle training prior to seeing a specialist (assuming there is no medical cause) for pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence
- Pelvic health physiotherapists do MORE than just pelvic floor exercises!!
No one wants to wait for 3-6 months before anything changes! Pelvic Health Physio’s certainly have an advanced understanding of the pelvic floor and pelvic anatomy, but also we have training to understand pelvic organ function. This means we have skills to manage bladder and bowel dysfunction, and some of this isn’t just pelvic floor exercises.
Other tools we frequently use are:
- Symptom related bladder diary analysis
- Lifestyle modifications
- Bladder retraining / behavioural retraining
- Bladder drills
- Transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS)
- Biofeedback
- Continence pessaries
Every woman is so unique, with her own history, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, and varied lifestyle requirements. As such, every treatment needs to be tailored to her and a full assessment is needed in order to come up with a treatment plan.
